HiQ, a language for quantum programs.

HiQ is a design today. There is no compiler to download yet. This page says what the language is for.

Abstract contour lines on a deep navy background.

Why a language

Three reasons.

Programs, not only circuits

A circuit lists gates. Real experiments also decide, repeat and react, and that logic should live in the program.

One program, more than one machine

The aim is source code that says what should happen and leaves the machine-specific work to a compiler.

Classical logic beside quantum logic

Measurements feed decisions. The two kinds of logic belong in one language rather than in two tools joined by hand.

Design goals

What the language should give you.

Control flow

Conditions and repetition written as program structure.

Typed classical data

Values with types, so that mistakes surface before anything runs.

Subroutines

Named pieces of a program that can be reused.

Portability

Moving a program between machines without rewriting it.

Evidence

Compiled work that fits the record QCOS keeps of each run.

Plain tooling

A language that sits with the tools developers already use.
